Our Story

Old Mill Boat & RV Self Storage has a rich history rooted in Placerville, California. Built in 1919 as the Caldor Box Factory, the mill initially thrived by producing wooden boxes for the burgeoning industries of the time. Caldor's reign lasted until 1958 when the industry shifted towards cardboard, leading to the sale of the mill to American Forest Products. This company astutely recognized the potential of the expansive indoor space and used it for lumber storage, capitalizing on the mill's proximity to Highway 50 and the abundant open space it provided.

The Wetsel family of Placerville purchased the mill and its surrounding land in 1971. Under the leadership of John Wetsel, the mill was transformed into a manufacturing plant for door and window frames. For nearly two decades, John Wetsel utilized the mill's unique structure and ample space to cultivate a successful business. However, as market conditions evolved, Wetsel shifted his focus towards developing an industrial park, leasing the mill to a wood trim manufacturing plant. This arrangement persisted until 1996, which marked a significant turning point for the mill.

In 1996, Old Mill Boat & RV Self Storage was born, bringing a new chapter to the mill's storied past.
